MIT stumble in fall opener

Teams:MIT vs Charles River RFC
Played:09/07/2019 @ MIT
Score: 35 - 54 MIT loss

On Saturday, September 7, 2019, MIT began the fall season by hosting Charles River RFC at Briggs Field. MIT scrimmaged against Boston RFC and the Boston Maccabi’s in the lead up to their fall opener. MIT could have used a few more scrimmages, as their poor tackling effort frequently let them down on the day.

The game started out positively, as outside center John G. kicked a penalty in the opening minutes to give MIT a 3-0 lead. Charles River responded immediately, and some poor defensive organization allowed Charles River to score in the right corner to make it 5-3. Another Charles River penalty led to John G.’s second kick at goal, making it 6-5. Charles River then poured on 3 consecutive tries, as their offensive runners overpowered MIT in the tackle area. MIT were able to utilize their pod systems, run beautifully by forwards Zach, Nick, and Michael, among others. Their hard work was rewarded when Nigel touched down for a try. Flyhalf James L. converted, in his first game back after a face-lift. Charles River added two more tries, but rookie winger Ferran responded with a try of his own for MIT before the half. The score at the half was 30-20 in Charles River’s favor.

Charles River wiped away any hope for a MIT victory as they scored twice more in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Center Tom scored 2 tries off the bench for MIT. MIT brought on dads Frank and Evan from the bench as well. Flanker Jordan also had a try, but it was all too little too late. Charles River successfully took advantage of their opportunities throughout the game, leading to a high score line and more importantly, the win.
